The ‘Offshore Wind Infrastructure Application Lab’ (OWI-Lab) aims to initiate and support innovative projects concerning offshore wind energy. The objective of the Application Lab is to increase the reliability and efficiency of offshore wind farms. OWI-Lab invested in state-of-the-art test & monitoring equipment and services, which can help the industry in reaching these goals. The OWI-Lab has been implemented and coordinated by Sirris, the collective centre of the Belgian technological industry. The initiative is supported by leading offshore wind energy players.

What we offer

1) Test Infrastructure and services

• Large climate chamber for system testing of large and heavy (wind turbine) components - up to 150 ton, temperature range -60°C to +60°C
• Multi-purpose offshore monitoring & measurements equipment
• Offshore datasets
• Data processing and interpretation (e.g. operational modal analysis, regression models,...)

2) Monitoring solutions and data analysis
• Dedicated structural health monitoring (SHM) solutions (e.g. for foundation monitoring), which already have been installed in several offshore wind farms.
• Advanced offshore data analysis (e.g. remaining life time analysis of foundations)
• Integration of innovative monitoring solutions (e.g. foundation monitoring using virtual sensors)

3) Set-up, project planning and proposal writing of research projects (industrial, SBO, FP7)

4) Dedicated R&D projects for (Offshore) wind energy: testing, monitoring, simulation, operations & maintenance,...

What we are looking for

1) Turbine manufacturers and component manufacturers

• With the large climate chamber we are able to set-up and perform tests on full scale components.
• With our short term measurement systems we are able to perform measurement campaigns under real loading conditions. The data can be processed by our team of analysts.

3) offshore wind farm developers and operators:

• With our short term measurement systems we are able to perform fully automated design verifications (e.g. foundation design verification).
• With our SHM solutions we are able to monitor the foundations (alarms, remaining life time,...)
